As we reported previously, streaming music service Rdio has filed bankruptcy and is being absorbed by Pandora. Roku was left holding the bag with Rdio owing Roku reportedly millions for the Rdio button installed on millions of remotes. Roku issued an email statement today about the closing of the service:
Dear Roku customer,
We’re writing you because according to our records, you own a Roku device which may include a remote control with the Rdio shortcut button, or you are a user of the Rdio music streaming channel. We’re sorry to say that our long-time channel partner, Rdio, has discontinued its streaming music service and is no longer available, effective December 22.
Here’s what this means for you:
If you were an existing Rdio subscriber or recently signed up for a trial subscription, your subscription has been cancelled, and you will no longer be charged for any future services. There is nothing else you need to do.
If you have an Rdio button on your remote, it will no longer launch Rdio or any other channel.
Wishing you a happy streaming season,
– Roku customer support
P.S. You can still stream music with one of our 100+ music channels.
