DirectTV Now Roku Launch Still Unknown (Not 1st Quarter)

Cord cutters that use Roku for their streaming fix and were waiting on DirectTV Now’s 1st quarter Roku launch will be waiting a little longer it seems.

Roku quietly updated their blog post from last November and removed the 1st quarter of 2017 verbiage. The blog now just states, “AT&T announced that it will launch DIRECTV NOW, a new live over-the-top (OTT) streaming service, which will be available in 2017 on Roku players and Roku TV models in the U.S.”

The longer delay is likely to leave more bad taste in the mouths of Roku owners towards DirectTV Now. Roku users were already upset at missing out on the $35 a month intro rate that was available to Amazon Fire and Apple TV users at the service launch.

The common unofficial reason for the delay in launch was said to be because the Roku interface requires specialized scripting. Both Sling TV, and Netflix have not had issues with specialized scripting and both are companies of a similar size as AT&T. For whatever reason AT&T is not interested in investing in the work needed to serve Roku users.

My guess is this increased delay will put another big hit in AT&T’s push at serving the cord cutting market, as Sling TV and PS Vue continue to see growth with Roku users. Besides those two competitors both Hulu and YouTube look to enter the live TV streaming market this year as well, and bot already have Roku apps for their other streaming services.
