Yahoo Screen has shut down, ending an experiment by Yahoo to house and create content under one umbrella as a competitor to Google’s YouTube. The troubled division was once part of a $42 million write down by the company.
Variety reports that the content will be spread out to various existing divisions of the company, and that the Yahoo Screen app has been removed form the Apple and Google Play stores.
The company said in a statement, “At Yahoo, we’re constantly reviewing and iterating on our products as we strive to create the best user experience. With that in mind, video content from Yahoo as well as our partners has been transitioned from Yahoo Screen to our Digital Magazine properties so users can discover complementary content in one place.”
As of this writing the Yahoo Roku channel app is still functional showing various Yahoo clips as well as full episodes of the Yahoo produced Community series.
Katie Couric is believed to still be staying on board as part of Yahoo’s news division and it is not clear if Yahoo will try and make another run at the NFL who has a streaming game package up for bid.
