Roku has begun rolling out the latest firmware update to it’s device, OS 8.1.
Roku sent out an email outlining the update:
Roku OS 8.1 introduces a new memory-level API for detecting when channels enter low- or critical-memory states, providing the opportunity to free up memory before the channel terminates.
The new firmware also deprecates five roDeviceInfo member functions, replacing them with parallel functions. Developers have one year to update their channels to adopt the new APIs.
This update also focuses heavily on DRM capabilities. Roku OS 8.1 adds new DRM metadata control attributes, beta support for Widevine DRM, and updates a subset of Roku devices to PlayReady 3.
