Last night I had a chance to sit down and watch the Netflix original movie “The Ridiculous 6”, starring Adam Sandler. This is the first in what I believe is a four movie deal by Sandler’s Happy Madison production company to make Netflix exclusive movies.
I had recently watched the made for streaming “Joe Dirt 2” on Crackle and that movie felt low budget and made for tv-ish, and I had concerns that the Netflix movies may have the same feel. If The Ridiculous 6 is any indication of the quality of pictures Netflix and Happy Madison are going to make though, it looks as if Netflix and their viewers got a good deal becaus unlike the Crackle movie the quality here was very high.
The movie stars Adam Sandler as Tommy “White Knife” Stockburn, Terry Crews as Chico, Jorge Garcia as HermTaylor, Lautner as Lil’ Pete, Rob Schneider as Ramon, Luke Wilson as Danny. Six wayward brothers (from different mothers) on a mission to save their estranged father (Nick Nolte as Frank Stockburn) from the western bad guy (Danny Trejo as Cicero). Sandler and crew deliver a top notch comedy, and while I wouldn’t say it is Blazing Saddles funny, I think you would be hard pressed to find any movie that is, western themed or otherwise.
The movie also features tons of cameos from actors such as Steve Buscemi as Doc Griffin, Harvey Keitel as Smiley Harris, David Spade as General Custer (not Custard, that’s a desert), Jon Lovitz as Ezekiel Grant, Norm Macdonald (as I think Norm Macdonald), Chris Parnell as Bank Manager, Blake Shelton as Wyatt Earp, John Turturro as Abner Doubleday, Vanilla Ice as Mark Twain, Dan Patrick as Abraham Lincoln, and Chris Kattan as John Wilkes Booth.
I am sure that this will get bashed just like Pixels (which was a great movie) did since for whatever reason the bashing Adam Sandler movies is the in thing right now. But if you like good comedies, or like westerns and don’t mind seeing a subtle spoof of the genre I think you will like this movie.
