Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos announced Marvel’s Jessica Jone would be renewed for a second season this morning at the Television Critics Association winter press tour. The second season order is for 13 episodes.
A release date has yet to be set in stone according to Sarandos, “The complex (part about setting a release date) is really running into The Defenders. (The Defenders) production schedule will affect a lot of the Season 2 and Season 3 outputs (of the other Marvel series).”
Netflix has also been rumored to have been very impressed with the Punisher appearance (and Jon Bernthal) in Daredevil that they were pushing ahead with a standalone series. While he Sarandos did not address a Punisher series specifically, IGN reports that he did say, “All the characters that spin out in that universe could spin out. Any character that’s in there is on the table, but nothing to talk about.”
He also addressed the possibility of an increase from he current target of two series per year featuring the Marvel characters, “It’s possible. Right now, these are produced at the scale of a major film, so they’re long production times and long post times. In some cases we have character crossover, which makes it more difficult to manage production in a way to jam two or three in. It’s not the goal, certainly, to put more than one or two out a year.”
