Mexico Roku Ban Upheld On Appeal

The court ordered banning of Roku sales in Mexico has been upheld on appeal.

Roku had challenged a June 29 ruling that reinstated a prior ban won by Mexican cable giant Cablevision. According to El Universal, Cablevision claims that the devices can be hacked to steal their content.

For it’s part the article quotes Roku as saying, “At Roku we consider that the Mexico City Civil Court order that is currently limiting the sale of our devices to Mexican consumers is a clear violation of Roku’s legal rights provided for in the constitution and the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).”

Roku also indicated they did not feel the ban extended outside Mexico City, Roku devices can still be legally sold in some stores in Mexico.”

Roku also indicated banning Roku’s will not be effective in Cablevision reaching their true target, “Banning the sale of Roku devices will not stop this activity being spread by devices connected to the network.”
