“Lost in Space” the classic and cult favorite 1960’s sci-fi TV series is in development at Netflix according to a story broke by Deadline.

The story states that Legendary TV is producing and that Netflix had won out on the bidding between multiple networks. “The new Lost In Space is described as an epic but grounded science fiction saga focusing on a young explorer family from earth lost in an alien universe and the challenges they face in staying together against seemingly insurmountable odds.”

Entertainment Weekly also weighed in and said that this is not a direct to series order yet. They spoke to executive producer Kevin Burns who has been shopping around the series for years in conjunction with now deceased series creator Irwin Allen’s widow, Shelia Allen. Burns said, “Am I thrilled? Yes. We’ve obviously been developing Lost in Space for a long time, and we’ve had a couple of false starts. Just speaking for myself, we really felt that we had learned a lot from not only what we did, but what other people did and did wrong.”

Te original series focused on the adventures of the Robinson family who were “Lost in Space” due to the actions of the devious Dr. Smith. There was also a remake movie in 1998 starring Matt LeBlanc.

With CBS recent announcement of a commitment to a Star Trek direct to streaming series, it looks like Netflix think sci-fi may be the way to go as well to attract viewers.
